Attendance-Arrival-Dismissal-Visitors

Attendance/Arrival-It is very important that your child be at school every day.  A lot of Kindergarten lessons are verbal making them difficult to “make up”.  Please make regular and prompt attendance a priority.  The building opens at 7:30 for those students riding early buses and children being dropped off.  Drop off is at the front gym doors.
*If your child is sick and must miss school, please send a note on the day your child returns to school explaining the absence.  Please date and sign the note.  If your child becomes sick while at school, he/she will be sent to Mrs. Buchanan, our school nurse.  She will call you if necessary.  Please be sure to keep us updated of any changes to the information on the gray emergency card.  Please refer to the student handbook for more specific information concerning attendance.

Dismissal-If you are picking up your child, he/she will be dismissed at the front gym doors at 2:15.  Three scan cards will be given to each child for pick up.  Please refer to the bright pink paper in your folder for more info.   Anytime you need to pick your child up early, please send a note letting me know.  When you arrive at school, you will ring the buzzer and wait outside.  If your child normally rides the bus, you must send a note(signed and dated) in the zipper pouch if he/she is going to be picked up or if he/she needs to ride a different bus.  All bus changes need to be approved by the office.  Otherwise, I will put him/her on the regular bus.  Last minute phone calls to the office for a bus/pick up change will only be permitted in the case of an emergency.  Please check local TV and radio stations or the school channel 39 or website for any school closing information.

Visitors-No visitors will be permitted at this time.  This, of course, is subject to change!

 Discipline-Communication-Grades

Discipline-I have adopted the following discipline plan.  I use magnetic pineapples and a traffic light.  Each child starts his/her day with his/her pineapple under the green.  If I give your child a warning for breaking a rule, he/she will move up to green.   Continuing to break rules after that will result in moving to yellow and then red.  If your child ends the day on green or above, he/she will get to stamp his/her behavior page for that day.
I will not be taking recess away for the first 8 weeks of school.  Instead, I will send home a behavior report that your child and I have filled out and discussed.  This report will need to be signed and returned the next day.  After 8 weeks the consequences will be:
  green= warning--no consequences
yellow= misbehavior code is written on behavior calendar—lose ½ recess
red = misbehavior code is written on behavior calendar—lose all recess
If behavior continues, the child is taken to the principal and/or the parents will be called.
The behavior page is in the green folder that will come home each night and must be signed/initialed and returned the next day.   Please check your child’s backpack and remove papers each night.

Conferences & Communication-Throughout the year I will be in touch through notes, behavior calendars, telephone calls, facebook messages, e-mails, weekly newsletters(You may access the newsletter on my school website at www.fairland.k12.oh.us.), school website, report cards, progress reports, and parent teacher phone conferences.  Please do not hesitate to contact me by phone 886-3120.  I can only receive calls after school from 2:30-3:00.  During the school day you can leave a message with the secretary.   You can also send a note and put inside the clear zipper pouch in your child’s folder.  If you need to contact me about something that doesn’t need immediate attention, you can also e-mail me at [email protected].  I try to check my e-mail daily, but it may not be until after school!

Homework-Breakfast-Snack-Lunch-Recess

Homework-Homework will be sent home 1-4 nights a week.  Your child will also bring home pre-decodable/decodable books to be read 3 times and signed sheet in folder 3 times.  All homework is due the next school day.

Breakfast-Breakfast will be served from 7:30 to 8:00.  The cost is $1.50.  If your child receives free or reduced lunch the same will apply to breakfast.   Reduced breakfast is $.30.

Snack-Our class has snack time each day.  Each child will be responsible for bringing one HEALTHY snack each day.  I will not have snacks on hand.  Please practice opening the packages/containers that your child will be bringing.  This will cut down on contact.  Also, your child may bring a bottle of WATER each day.  It may be a disposable or reusable bottle.  Again, please just be sure that he/she can open and close it.   I would like the snack to be packed in the front pocket of your child’s backpack for easy access. To avoid confusion, please do not pack your child’s snack in his/her lunch box.

Lunch-Kindergarten has lunch at approximately 11:30.  Your child may purchase a lunch from the cafeteria or bring a packed lunch.  The cost of lunch, which includes milk, is $2.70.   Reduced lunch is $.40.  Chocolate or white milk may be purchased to go with a packed lunch for $.30.  Carbonated beverages are not permitted.  Children who qualify for a free or reduced lunch do not receive free milk when they choose to bring a packed lunch from home.  They must bring a drink or purchase a milk. Students are permitted to pre-pay for the whole week on Mondays.  I actually suggest this method especially for Kindergarten!  This alleviates stress on the child (and parents!)   to have to deal with the money each day.   Just send the money or check (to Fairland East) in an envelope and put it inside the zipper pouch inside the green folder.

Recess-Kindergarten recess is at 11:00 each day.  We will go outside unless it is raining or very cold.  Please be sure your child is dressed appropriately.  For the first few weeks, I will have play-doh for the children to play with in case of inside recess.  When the weather turns colder and we are inside a lot more, I am going to ask each child to have his/her own gallon size baggie of activities/toys to play with for inside recess.  I will let you know when I am ready for those, but you can be thinking about it.   Everything must fit in a gallon baggie and zip.  Hint: the slider zipper bags are much easier for them to do independently.

Curriculum
Reading-Fairland East uses the Imagine It! Reading Program.  It is a phonics based program which teaches letter recognition, sounds for each letter and blending those sounds to make words.  We will begin by learning each letter then the sounds.  Later on we will start blending to read and spell words.   The children will be exposed to a wide variety of literature.  We will also have a list of high frequency words that will grow throughout the year.

Math-Kindergarten Math is taught through calendar time, hands-on activities and practice worksheets/workbook.   The children use manipulatives to explore counting, sorting, patterning, addition, subtraction, estimating, graphing, measurement, time and money. The worksheets and workbooks are used for assessment, reinforce the skills taught and give the children practice printing numerals.

Writing-The children will begin doing Process Writing the first week of school.  They are given a topic and then draw a picture to illustrate that topic.   These will be topics that we are talking about in class.  After Christmas we will begin writing sentences that include our spelling words.   They will progress until they are ready to write in their “First Grade Journals” at the end of the year.

Science & Social Studies-Science and Social Studies is taught by themes.  Some of the themes we will do this year are Community Helpers, Pumpkins, Christmas Around the World, Growing and Changing, Penguins,  American Symbols, Presidents, Ladybugs, Frogs and Butterflies.

Online Work-We will be sending passwords for various online programs that will be used throughout the year, especially if we have to go virtual at any point.

Music-The children will have a 30 minute music class with Mr. Black each week. We will also have singing time each day in class and will learn songs to go along with our units.  Music day is Monday.

Gym-Our class will have a 30 minute P.E. class each week with Mr. Speed.  The children need to wear tennis shoes on gym day.  P.E. day is Wednesday.

Art-We will do art projects in class throughout the year!

Computer- We will be going to the computer lab 1-2 days a week.

Supplies-Fees-Money

Supplies and Fees-The Supply Fee includes your child’s Math workbook, paper, pencils, art supplies, etc… Your child will not need to bring any of these things from home.   This year’s fee is $50.00.  The supply fee may be paid in full or in smaller payments($12.50)  made each 9 weeks.  Please make checks payable to Fairland East.  A reminder will be sent home prior to the end of each 9 week grading period.

Money-When you send money to school with your child, always send it in a baggie or an envelope and put it in the zipper pouch inside the green folder with the following information:
*your child’s name
*teacher’s name
*the purpose of the money (lunch, breakfast, fees, party, book club, etc…)
**If sending cash it must be the Exact Amount!!
**Money that is not properly labeled will not be removed from the folder.  Thanks!
