  Materials Needed for 8th grade Reading
Supply list
2 Composition notebooks
red grading pen
note cards (100)  
pencils
glue sticks (at least 6)
colored pencils, markers, and/or crayons 
scissors 
loose leaf paper 
folder with 3 prongs for holding paper (this will be for 1st semester book report assignment)
 
Books: The Boy in the Striped Pajamas by John Boyne  
Night by Elie Wiesel 
must have books in hand September 16
tissues and wet wipes are always appreciated as extra supplies
 

Project given to all students and due December 10 on The Boy in the Striped Pajamas

2nd semester everyone is required to a book report 

2nd  semester book report cannot be on any required reading (from any grade) or books that have been made into a movie, youtube video, or TV show)) Books must also be 6th grade level  or lexile score of 860 or higher. If a google search shows movie, youtube, TV or low lexile score - report will earn a failing score.

Parents should always check his/her child's student agenda every day. 

 Students may have additional homework not posted.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:  Extra credit given every nine weeks. Requirements are different for each nine weeks.Details will be given to each student. Forms or instructions are available from Miss Gorby.  I keep instructions for extra credit and required book reports in my room every day until the day the project is due.  Late reports are only accepted for excused absences.

 

         One book report is required each semester.  Each report is weighted the same as 6 test grades.

  • Reading- NO vocabulary test and comprehension test - all students are allowed to use their reading book while working on comprehension test - after tests all students are expected to read silently their choice of materials
  • Starting in kindergarten, if a student reads 20 minutes a day at home, they will hear 1.8 million words per year.  They will have read for 851 hours and by 6th grade on standardized tests, they will likely score better than 90% of their peers.("How Reading Impacts")
